I always thought that Hong Kong is one of those cities that never sleep. Unfortunately, major shops and restaurants close albeit a little later than those in Manila. We were just lucky that we went there during the holidays because their operating hours were extended.
Green Islands Restaurant is one of those we found to be operating even beyond 10pm. We ate there around 11pm the day after Christmas and surprisingly, it still was very busy. As it was already late at night, we just ordered something light 😛
Hong Kong-style milk tea (dai pai dong) is a drink made of black tea and evaporated milk (not condensed milk). It is also known as “pantyhose tea” or “silk stocking tea” because it is often brewed in a large tea sock that resembles pantyhose. I can’t say that the milk tea from Green Islands is the best because I have to admit it’s the first one I’ve tasted, but the tea was smooth, creamy and full-flavored… I really liked it! 🙂
Beef Satay Noodle Soup
I asked for a beef noodle soup hoping that I can get something like Super Bowl’s Beef Brisket Tendon Noodle Soup but they only have Beef Satay Noodle Soup. I did not like it much because I reckoned it’s too salty. Or maybe it’s just me who’s not too high on sodium chloride. I was hoping I’d figure out the “satay” flavor in the soup sooner but it’s not there. To me, Lucky Me’s Bulalo-flavored instant noodles would have been a better choice.
Toasts with Ham & Egg Omelet
I also got a toast with ham omelet. This is not to say it’s superb but I liked this more than the soup. Actually, the omelet was dry and looked overcooked but what’s sad is that I was able to finish it 😛 I guess I was THAT starved.
My overall rating in a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, I’d say that Green Islands Restaurant is only a 2.5. I could have ignored the dirty floors and tables had the food been great but that, coupled with the difficulty in communicating with the waiters (only the Manager knows how to speak English) plus the fact that I find the whole meal which is a little less than HK$50 to be expensive, I don’t feel that this restaurant should come highly recommended.
