Cold Pickled Melons and Pears

This is my official entry to PinoyFoodista’s March Cooking Challenge, the theme of which is “Summer Spree, the flavors of Summer.” It’s funny that it’s Spring at the other side of the globe but here in the Philippines, we’re already welcoming Summer πŸ™‚

For this Challenge, we’re asked to create any dish that reminds us of summer be it an appetizer, a salad, main course, dessert or beverage. I’m thinking of a unique way to attack melons and I suddenly thoughtΒ  about Momofuku’s pickled fruits. Because the pickled fruits are served cold and were said to have a great snap when eaten, I figured they might be my best option for the Challenge.

Fresh fruits, check!

Serve cold, check!

With a twist, check!

Nothing else left but to roll up my sleeves and say, hello Summer! πŸ™‚

Pickled Melon

  • half a melon
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 3Β  tablespoons white sugar (heaping)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Mix the lukewarm water with vinegar.

Add the white sugar and salt.

Mix until the sugar and salt are dissolved. Set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, cut the melon into lengthwise slices.

Remove the seeds and peel.

Cut into large bite-size chunks.

Place the melons in a glass container/dish with cover. Pour the vinegar mixture.

Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour.

The pickled melon is ready to eat after being refrigerated for at least 1 hour and should be consumed within 24 hours. You can also do this for watermelons πŸ™‚ Serve and enjoy!

Pickled Pears

  • 2 Asian pears
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar (heaping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Same as above, combine the water and vinegar. Add the sugar and salt then mix until well blended. Set aside and let cool.

Halve, core and peel the pears. Slice into 1/4-inch thick slices.

Put the slices in a glass container/dish and pour in the vinegar mixture. Refrigerate for at least an hour. Consume within the day. You can also do this for apples πŸ™‚

Serve and enjoy!

If this doesn’t remind me of summer, nothing else will! I love melons and pickling them sounds so interesting. I’m going to have to try it out soon! Good luck on the entry!!

I can’t wait to say hello to summer, it’s been so chilly here in CT! These recipes sound neat, I’ve never heard of pickled fruits. Neat-o!
